The Great Shakeout will be on October 20th this year. I talked to Steve Goldfarb from USC about helping out, but not wanting to step on ARES toes. He said he would talk to the people at the hospital (Jennifer) and let me know what role we would have. He was especially interested in the use of our repeaters to contact the main USC campus if other modes fail and wanted to do a separate test of the hospital’s radio prior to the Shakeout. More to come on this.
Just a reminder that dues are due, so if you haven’t paid yet please do. Also, if you ordered a new name badge from Pet at the last meeting, plan on paying for it at this meeting. Thanks Pet for setting up the club’s new Paypal account. Many people have already used it to pay for dues, repeater donations, and the new name badges. We appreciate them using the account to get their payments turned in as it adds both ease and convenience for everyone. As an added bonus, some hams that cannot make the meetings have now joined and paid dues thru Paypal.
The topic of this month’s meeting will be about cold war era spying and miniature microphones and radios. It is a fascinating topic. Also we will have a video and discussion on testing coaxial cables. We all use them but how do you know when to replace them?
If you have been working on an interesting project, please bring it for the show and tell part of the meeting.
With the fall weather coming, would anyone be interested in a mini QRP field day. Maybe hike up the trail north of the observatory in Griffith Park to the flat area of Mount Hollywood and see what we can work. We can bring up some lunch and drinks to make it more enjoyable. Let’s discuss it or any other possible new events at the meeting.
