Prez Sez – August 2016

We had a good meeting in July and discussed a lot of club business. We also planned the picnic that will be held at Crescenta Valley Park on Sunday, August 14th . We will be at our normal location at the northeast corner of the park. This year will be a potluck like we do at Christmas. Mark K. will make the traditional zippy burgers but the members will help with the other (see below list). Also remember to bring 2m HTs for a fox...

Prez Sez – June/July 2016

After missing the June Prez Sez column due to a busy June, I can now play catch-up and write for two months at once. From reading QST and CQ magazines and watching Ham Nation, I have come to the conclusion that there are two styles of Field Day operation. The first style is the contest points at all costs station. They usually have at least ten transceivers, beams on towers, formal meal service, and six bottles of aspirin to help with...

Prez Sez – May 2016

May is here and with it comes out preparation for Field Day in June. At the May meeting we will set down the equipment responsibilities and how we will run this year’s Field Day. As in the previous few years, it will be held at Verdugo Park in Glendale. The park provides easy access, parking, shade, trees for hanging antennas, and a convenient location. I look forward to the fun of shooting up lines over trees with Tom’s air bazooka....

Prez Sez – April 2016

I hope you have been enjoying our beautiful spring with everything in the gardens in bloom. We even had a spring thunderstorm recently. When I look at the television news and see the severe weather they have been having east of the Rockies, I am glad I live here and only have to disconnect my antennas a few times a year. Our meeting this month will feature the topics of power supplies and trouble shooting HF stations. Speaking of...

Prez Sez – March 2016

I have been thinking lately how to increase to attendance at our club breakfasts on the first Saturday of each month. Mark Gershen came up with a simple, but great solution. Change the start times to 8:00 AM from 7:30. At the upcoming breakfast on 3/5, we will meet at our regular time, and then discuss making the change. In case you are not aware of it, W5KUB, produces a ham video show at http://tmedlin.com/kiwi.htm. It is quite...

Prez Sez – February 2016

One of the latest trends in the last couple of years is called “Maker Fair” and being a “Maker”. What is a maker? We used to call it a “Do It Yourselfer”. Hams have been (and currently are) active in both movements. Many older hams complain about modern hams being operators of equipment rather than builders. This has a lot of truth in it because of the complexity of modern radios. But we are currently in another golden age of kits....

Prez Sez December 2015

Happy Holidays! I hope by the time you read this you will be in the holiday mood for our upcoming Holiday Party on December 10, 2015. It will be in the First Baptist Church of La Crescenta again and we will start serving at 6:30. The club will supply the turkey and ham but, as is our tradition, we are asking the members to bring salads, side dishes and desserts. What you bring is determined by the first letter of the suffix of your...
