Prez Sez September 2017

Hi Everyone, The latest news on the repeater situation is that Pet and Mark K. went up the mountain yesterday and installed our new Samlex power supply. This should put the problems we have been having to rest. The new supply is a rack mounted four times redundant supply. It has 4 20A sections and if one or more go bad the others will still function to keep things going.Thank you to Pet, Mark K., and David for taking care of this....

Prez Sez August 2017

Hi Everyone, Diana Feinberg gave an excellent and very interesting presentation on lighthouses at the July meeting. It is really great that ARRL supports us with presentations. This month we are having our traditional picnic instead of a meeting at the hospital. The picnic will be on the second Sunday in August, August 13th. We will meet in the northeast corner of Crescenta Valley Park at 5 PM as we have in the past. This year since...

Prez Sez – July 2017

Our July meeting will feature Diana Feinberg, our ARRL Section Manager, giving a presentation on “Lighthouses on the Air”. She will also discuss how to motivate the city to better utilize amateur radio for emergencies. Diana stopped by our Field Day tent and visited for a while before having to get on with visits to other clubs. We will also review how Field Day went this year and any changes we want to make for the future. Generally,...

Prez Sez – June 2017

Hi Everyone, After we celebrate Memorial Day, Field Day is the next event on our calendars. At our June meeting we will finalize equipment needs and who is bringing what items. One major change this year is that we will not have the solar power trailer that Robert Fry has so generously been letting us use. He has a new job in Boston and may be back next year and can let us use it then. Anyway, this year we will be on generator power....

Prez Sez – May 2017

Hi Everyone, I hope you are having a nice Spring and getting outdoors to enjoy it.  Even propagation on the HF bands has improved in the last week. Several weeks ago our 440 repeater started having problems and was shut down. On Sunday, April 30th, David B. and Pet went up the hill to check things out. The power supply was the problem and probably the rectifier diodes. I gave them one of my backup supplies to use temporarily and...

Prez Sez – April 2017

I hope everyone has been enjoying the wonderful Spring we are having after all the rains. There is literally a superbloom of flowers and trees this year. As you know I volunteer a few days every week at Descanso Gardens and it is spectacular with almost everything in bloom right now. Okay, now the radio stuff……………. I am looking forward to this meeting where the topic will be working amateur satellites and building an antenna to work...

Pres Sez – March 2017

Last month I had the virus that “keeps on giving” and was sorry I had to miss the February meeting. Thank you to Tom and the other members who helped make the meeting a success. Between having a real winter (wet, cold, and damp) and my illness, I have still not completed several kits that I have on the workbench. When I complete them I will bring them in to share. Meanwhile here is a short 15 min that K6UDA made on a new WSPRnet...

Pres Sez – February 2017

Hi Everyone, I apologize for this month’s Prez Sez being late, but I have been ill with some respiratory virus.  While I will miss the February meeting, I plan on  being at the next one. This bug is something that I won’t transmit. (pun intended) I recently received an email from Yoshio KE6ACH about the VHF / UHF DX book. While it is currently not in print, it is available free over the internet. Here is what Yoshio told me:...

Pres Sez – January 2017

I hope everybody had a nice holiday. As we start the new year I am going to do something new. Instead of the tradition of letting you know what the main topic of the meeting is ahead of time, I am keeping it a secret. Your clue is that it has something to do with an article in the January 2017 QST. I have been following this topic for a year now and I think everyone will be inspired by it. At the club’s holiday party I forgot to have...

Pres Sez – November 2016

It is hard to believe that November is here again. It has been a very busy fall. In October, Eric Christiansen and I spent several evenings getting the hospitals VHF/UHF radio reprogrammed and operational. Thank you big time Eric. Then on Oct 20th, Tom and I manned the hospital command center during the Great Shakeout. Tom designed a log page and we both had a successful learning experience as part of the USC  emergency radio...

Pres Sez – October 2016

Hi Everyone, The Great Shakeout will be on October 20th this year. I talked to Steve Goldfarb from USC about helping out, but not wanting to step on ARES toes. He said he would talk to the people at the hospital (Jennifer) and let me know what role we would have. He was especially interested in the use of our repeaters to contact the main USC campus if other modes fail and wanted to do a separate test of the hospital’s radio prior to...

Prez Sez – September 2016

We had a nice turnout for our annual August picnic and everyone got to enjoy Mark K.’s zippy burgers. The new method of signing up for items to bring seemed to work well, but next year we need to add lettuce and tomatoes for the hamburgers.  It was great seeing some people who have trouble making the regular meetings. Tim K6POI and his friend Zack drove in from Thousand Oaks. Mark W. and David did a great job hiding the...
